For Students About UMMA

About the Search

President Mary Sue Coleman has appointed a search advisory committee to assist her in the selection of a new director for the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA). Chaired by Provost Teresa Sullivan, the advisory committee met at the beginning of April 2009 to receive its charge from the President to conduct an international search, which is now underway with the assistance of Auerbach Associates, a Boston firm.

During April, the consultants, Judith Auerbach and Kit Nichols, met with UMMA constituents and other key stakeholders to get feedback on the qualities to seek in a new director and the challenges and opportunities ahead for UMMA. This feedback will inform the advisory committee as it creates the position description, a document that will guide the selection of potential candidates. The position description is available on this web site.

Nominations and applications will be solicited through a position announcement in higher education and professional publications and through outreach to members of international communities in the museum and arts fields. Nominations, applications, and inquiries are encouraged and will be treated in a confidential manner. All nominations and applications will be considered. Please send them to Auerbach Associates at
