In 2009, the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) will complete a transformative expansion and restoration project that will more than double its current size. The expansion of its galleries from 11,892 to 23,324 square feet means that many more works from its outstanding collections (more than 18,000 objects, with particular depth in European, American, Asian, and African art) will be on view. The reinstalled galleries will deploy new interpretive strategies, offering a variety of voices, viewpoints, and narratives, and fostering connections across disciplines, geographies, and cultures.

The expanded facility will also feature a 200-seat auditorium and enhanced programming, open storage offering visual access to an additional 1,200 works of art, object study classrooms, a library, and a commons area with extended hours and food service.

During the period in which our main facility is closed for construction, there remain a variety of ways to include the Museum in your teaching and research:

    • Visit UMMA Off/Site our temporary gallery located at 1301 South University, featuring exhibitions of photography, film, and video. Preview the season’s exhibitions, including the world premiere of an exhibition related to the University’s China theme year. Click Class Visits for details on bringing your class to Off/Site.

    • Search UMMA’s online collections database.

    • Visit our Programs and Tours page for upcoming symposia, artist talks, film screenings, and performances.

    • Listen to podcasts from last winter’s remarkable “Reimaging the Museum” series of public dialogues, featuring some of the nation’s leading thinkers about the role of museums in 21st-century civic and intellectual life.
