Class Visits : Docent ToursDocent tours help visitors of all ages feel at home in a Museum or gallery environment and comfortable with works of art. Fun as well as factual, docent-led tours provide relevant information on artists, subject matter, materials, and context. They build “looking skills” and confidence and encourage visitors to discover and enjoy the world of art. School tours also create interactive experiences that build critical thinking skills such as observation and analysis. Tours—45-60 minutes in length—for both school and adult groups are available by request. In addition to the collections-based tours, architecture tours highlighting the story of the Museum’s recent transformation as well as its history will be available. Picturing America: Again this year, UMMA—in partnership with the Michigan Humanities Council—will offer a docent-led tour called Picturing America to grades 1 through 5 in November and December. The docent-led survey of American art includes works that support and complement Picturing America. For an application, contact the Michigan Humanities Council at 517-372-7770 or email gparker@mihumanities.org. For more information or to schedule docent tours, please contact umma-tours@umich.edu. Subsidies to defray school bus charges are available. Please see Busing Funds for more information. |
