Class Visits : Docent Tours

Docent tours help visitors of all ages feel at home in a Museum or gallery environment and comfortable with works of art. Fun as well as factual, docent-led tours provide relevant information on artists, subject matter, materials, and context. They build “looking skills” and confidence and encourage visitors to discover and enjoy the world of art. School tours also create interactive experiences that build critical thinking skills such as observation and analysis.

Teachers should note that UMMA Off/Site will offer exhibitions of photography and video art that will be more comtemporary in subject matter than our galleries in Alumni Memorial Hall.

Tours—45-60 minutes in length—for both school and adult groups are available by request, depending on volunteer availability. Subsidies to defray school bus charges are available on a limited basis. To schedule Docent tours, connect Debbie Swartz at (734) 647-0522 or dgswartz@umich.edu.
