Class Visits : Self-Guided Groups

Self-guided groups are always welcome at the Museum.

In order to make the UMMA experience good for everyone, however, we ask self-guided groups to attend to the following guidelines. We require that elementary-aged students be accompanied by one adult per 6 children for K-2, one per 8 for grades 3-5, and one per 10 for older students. Special needs students are welcome in the Museum and we can best accommodate their visit if you call ahead for any extra support you need.

Teachers are encouraged to become familiar with the content of the exhibitions at UMMA before bringing their classes to the Museum by looking at the “On View” section of this website. The General Information section under “Visiting” also provides important information.

For groups traveling to the Museum by bus, the drop off/pick up location is on South University from the westbound lane just before State Street. Groups may enter the Museum through either of the entrances on State Street. Upon entering, teachers are asked to notify the information desk, which is found in Alumni Memorial Hall, of the group’s arrival. A coatroom is available for use. Museum floor plans found in the General Information section of this website may help teachers plan routes through the Museum.

Please add your self-guided tour to our calendar so you get the best experience in the galleries. Scheduling your tour allows us to reserve the space for your group.

We ask that you schedule your visit in advance by contacting umma-tours@umich.edu.

Please review these additional guidelines, particularly if your self-guided group will include school-age children.
