Class VisitsThe Museum invites classes to visit our temporary exhibitions at UMMA Off/Site, our temporary gallery space at 1301 South University. Docent tours in this space will be specific to the specialized content of the single exhibition that is on view. Teachers, therefore, are encouraged to become familiar with the content of the exhibitions at UMMA Off/Site before scheduling a tour by looking at the On View section of this website. Docents can help teachers evaluate the appropriateness of each exhibition to the class interests and needs. Teachers are asked to schedule docent tours at least three weeks in advance. A docent will contact the classroom teacher to discuss the theme and content of the tour. In this new space, the Museum can accommodate up to 24-30 students in one visit. These groups are subdivided into smaller groups, each led by a docent. We require that elementary-aged students be accompanied by one adult per 6 children for K-2, one per 8 for grades 3-5, and one per 10 for older students. Special needs students are welcome in the Museum. Kindergartners may participate in a tour during the second semester of the academic year when they have settled into the routine of schooling. Funds are available to school groups to reimburse them for busing expenses. Self-guided groups are also welcome. We ask that such groups follow chaperone guidelines and schedule in advance by calling Debbie Swartz at 734.647.0522 or emailing dgswartz@umich.edu |
