Class Visits

The Museum invites classes to visit the newly expanded space and explore the new galleries. Students and teachers can find themselves discovering a beautiful painting in a quiet nook or wondering at the magnificent height of the ceilings in the restored apse.

Teachers are encouraged to become familiar with the content of the exhibitions at UMMA before scheduling a tour by looking at the On View section of this website. Docents can help teachers evaluate the appropriateness of each exhibition to the class interests and needs.

Teachers are asked to schedule docent tours at least three weeks in advance. A docent will contact the classroom teacher to discuss the theme and content of the tour. The Museum can accommodate up to sixty students in one visit. These groups are subdivided into smaller groups, each led by a docent. We require that elementary-aged students be accompanied by one adult per 6 children for K-2, one per 8 for grades 3-5, and one per 10 for older students. Special needs students are welcome in the Museum. Kindergartners may participate in a tour during the second semester of the academic year when they have settled into the routine of schooling. Funds are available to school groups to reimburse them for busing expenses.

Self-guided groups are always welcome. Please see Self-Guided Groups.
