UM Students: Get Involved

Student Docents

Developing and delivering tours for children, UM Staff, and the public; working with children and families on the weekends; and meeting teens in the Museum are some of the possible activities you would undertake as an UMMA Student Docent. This program invites you to be creative and enthusiastic as you prepare and guide tours and offers you time to meet staff members and peek inside Museum operations. It provides an introduction to museums in general and museum education in particular.

Interested UM students will be asked to complete an application to the program (see below). Applicants will be trained in museum education techniques—required meetings will be Wednesdays, 4–6 pm—and complete a tour for their peers during the fall semester. An information session will be held on Wednesday, September 14 at 4 pm. Undergraduate Museum Studies Program students may arrange to use this as part of their internship requirements.

Application: If you are interested in applying to this program, please send the following information to Pam Reister (preister@umich.edu) by September 12, 2011: Name, email, phone, major, graduation date (year). Also state whether or not you are a Museum Studies Program student. Please also include why you are interested in being a student docent and what experience you would bring to the program.
