Suspended Moments: Photographs from the David S. Rosen Collection

Each of the works in Suspended Moments: Photographs from the David S. Rosen Collection offer insights into an interior world—featuring photographs of children at various stages, particularly those difficult years that chart the transition from childhood to adulthood.

Most of the selected images are very closely related to the research interests of the collector, Dr. David S. Rosen, who was a physician on the staff of the University of Michigan Medical School, and a pediatrician with a specialization in adolescent medicine. The exhibition features the works of photographers known for their images of childhood, such as Sally Mann, Dawoud Bey, and Helen Levitt, and also includes photographs taken by Dr. Rosen himself. Other images on view examine the doctor’s vision as a collector, in works by noted landscape and still life photographers such as Ansel Adams, Michael Kenna, Howard Bond, and Billie Mercer. Suspended Moments features 26 of more than 150 photographic works that were added to UMMA’s collection through Dr. Rosen’s bequest in 2013.
