Special Travel Opportunity for
Friends of the Museum of Art
September 1–8, 2006
2006 is the centenary of the French painter Paul Cézanne’s death. Mark the occasion by joining a trip sponsored by UMMA and the Matthaei Botanical Gardens/Nichols Arboretum to Provence and the French Riviera. We’ll pay a visit to the artist’s centenary exhibition in Aix-en-Provence, which is co-organized by the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence. We will retrace Cézanne’s steps through Mount Sainte-Victoire, the Bibemus Quarry, Jas de Buffan (the Cézanne family mansion in Aix), the Hills of St. John, and other places he immortalized, several of which are still in private hands and not open to the public. A brief visit to Arles and sites associated with Vincent Van Gogh will also be included. Excursions to gardens of the Riviera are another special opportunity afforded by this trip, including visits to the Foundation Maeght and spectacular gardens, both public and private, in the region. The trip, which will include accommodation at four-star hotels in Aix and Nice as well as a number of meals, is organized by Decouvertes, a luxury travel firm in France. Space is limited and is available on a first-come, first-served basis to members of UMMA or the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum at the $100 membership level and above.
