Past Exhibitions: 2002Manual Alvarez Bravo: 100 Years
July 20-October 13, 2002
For a portion of the summer and fall, a section of the gallery will be devoted to a survey of the work of Mexico's premier photographer, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, whose centennial was marked in February. Alvarez Bravo was one of the leading artists of post-revolutionary Mexico (1910-1920), a moment of extraordinary creative dialogue as many international artists and writers traveled to Mexico. Alvarez Bravo created photographs that blend an interest in picturing the everyday scene with a subtle understanding of the formal properties that exist beneath such scenes. Powerful and sometimes mysterious, these photographs from the UMMA collections demonstrate why Alvarez Bravo deserves to be counted among the world's great photographers. |
